For more than two years, US President Biden managed to get through the corona pandemic unscathed, including the presidential election campaign. Now the 79-year-old has been infected. His symptoms are “very mild”.
US President Joe Biden has been infected with the corona virus. The 79-year-old had tested positive, the White House said in Washington. He has “very mild symptoms” and is being treated with Paxlovid. Per CDC guidelines, Biden will self-isolate at the White House. During this time, he will continue to “fulfill all his duties”. He will participate in the meetings scheduled for today by telephone and videoconference from his home.
Biden visited the state of Massachusetts yesterday. Biden spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that all of the president’s close contacts would be notified, including members of the traveling delegation. Biden last tested negative for the corona virus on Tuesday. Biden will work in isolation until he tests negative again. For reasons of transparency, the White House will report on the president’s health on a daily basis.
According to the White House, the US Democrat is fully vaccinated against the virus and received two booster shots, the last at the end of March. Recently, however, there had been an abundance of corona infections in his government and those around him.
Many corona cases among US politicians
In recent months there have been numerous cases of corona among political celebrities in the US capital Washington. After an evening event in early April, more than 60 attendees tested positive for the virus, as US media reported at the time, citing organizers. Among them were Attorney General Merrick Garland, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, several members of Congress, as well as Vice President Communications Director Kamala Harris and other White House officials.
If Biden was unable to hold office at any time due to the infection, Vice President Kamala Harris would have to step in. The 57-year-old had also tested positive for the corona virus in April.
The predecessor Trump also had Corona
Biden is not the first corona case in the Oval Office: In 2020, then-incumbent Donald Trump contracted the virus – less than five weeks before the presidential election, in which Biden emerged victorious. Trump was infected at a time when vaccines were not yet available. At the time, he had to be hospitalized for some time.
Other world leaders have also been affected, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. Johnson occasionally had to be treated in an intensive care unit.
