Transphorm and TDK-Lambda Announce Expansion of AC-DC GaN Power Module Family

GOLETA, California (USA), March 16, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Transphorm, Inc. (Nasdaq: TGAN), a pioneer and global provider of highly reliable, high-performance gallium nitride (GaN) power conversion products, today confirmed that the leading manufacturer of TDK-Lambda power supplies, a TDK group company, has expanded its GaN-based PFH500F product line. The PFH500F-12 and PFH500F-48 are the second and third modules in TDK’s line of 500-watt AC/DC power supplies. Each offers 12V and 48V power outputs. As with its predecessor, the 28V GaN-based PFH500F-28, these latest power supplies offer several benefits of GaN for end-use applications, including increased 6% in efficiency in a 13% smaller device package. Together, these advantages result in a power density improvement of 38 percent compared to the 12 V and 48 V silicon-based modules PFE500SA-12 and PFE500SA-48, established by TDK-Lambda.

The PFH500F series uses 72mΩ, 8×8 PQFN GaN FETs (TP65H070LDG) from Transphorm. The high power density of these power transistors allowed TDK to use thin motherboards to cool GaN power supplies. In return, TDK was able to produce a slimmer, sealed power module capable of supporting a variety of broad industrial applications operating in harsh environments. These applications include commercial (COTS) power supplies, custom fanless power supplies, 5G communications, lasers, digital signage/displays, signage, and more.

Designed by the team at TDK-Lambda Americas in Dallas, TX, the 12V and 48V PFH500F modules use a bridgeless totem pole PFC configuration. While the main 28V GaN power supply took over three years to develop, TDK’s engineering team was able to adapt their knowledge to produce these latest models in a year.

TDK-Lambda’s PFH500F-12 and PFH500F-48 power modules offer the following advantages over the silicon-based PFE500SA-12 and PFE500SA-48:

  • Energy efficiency: 92%, which represents an increase of 6%

  • Power density: > 100 W/in^3, which is a 38% increase

  • PMBus™ monitoring and programming (read/write)

  • Board size reduction: from 116.8 x 61 (mm) to 101.6 x 61 (mm), which is a reduction of 13%

  • Reduced size of external capacitive components
