Roland Emmerich finds himself in the arena of gladiators. However, he will not make “Those who are going to die” as a film, but as a series.

Hollywood filmmaker Roland Emmerich (66), known worldwide as the “Swabian Spielberg” especially for his disaster tapes, goes under the direction of series directors. This has now been announced by production company High End Productions and US streaming provider Peacock. The planned series will be called “Those About to Die” and seems made for Emmerich: as a monumental historical drama, it will revolve around the martial universe of gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome.

The director is already looking forward to “bringing this world of blood, sweat and tears to television.” Interested series fans can certainly prepare for some nerve-wracking Emmerich-branded action sequences. But “Those Who Will Die” should also take place away from the Colosseum and shed light on Roman politics and society. The non-fiction book of the same name by author Daniel Mannix serves as a model for doing this in the most authentic way possible. At first glance, it looks like a mixture of Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” (84) and the bloody “Spartacus” series.

Oliver Berben is also on board

In addition to Roland Emmerich, Oliver Berben (50) will also act as the series’ executive producer. It promises to bring “an extraordinary story and perspective like we’ve never seen before” to television. “At its core, this is a sporting epic driven by strong and diverse characters exploring paths to glory, downfalls and the need to belong to something bigger than themselves,” adds Emmerich.

The screenplay for ‘Those About To Die’ comes from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat, with whom Emmerich previously worked on another historical drama: his 2000 tape ‘The Patriot’, in which Mel Gibson (66) unwittingly finds himself between the fronts of the American Revolutionary War.

Not the first excursion in the series

About 25 years ago, Emmerich and Dean Devlin (59) dreamed up the short-lived series “The Visitor” starring John Corbett (61), which was discontinued in 1998 after just one season. Unlike “Those About To Die”, however, he was not assigned to direct it.

The launch date of his new project has not yet been announced. However, the American industry website “Deadline” mentions itproduction is expected to start in the first quarter of next year. The site also claims to have uncovered an alleged budget – that they plan to let Emmerich’s Gladiator Epic cost around US$140 million.
