According to the Berlin Senate, the Bundeswehr will send 80 soldiers to the city from Thursday. As a Senate spokeswoman announced on Wednesday, the soldiers should provide support in Tegel for a limited time.
It will probably be trained by employees of the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) starting Thursday.
They will be used, for example, in the registration of war refugees at the arrivals center of the former Tegel airport. According to reports, the requested soldiers could be removed from the health authorities’ contact tracing of corona-infected people.
However, a Defense Ministry spokesman told the Tagesspiegel on Wednesday that he had not yet been able to confirm that Berlin’s request for administrative assistance and the deployment of 80 soldiers had been approved. However, a decision could be made shortly.
As reported, Berlin had sent a request for administrative assistance to the Bundeswehr for support in dealing with refugees due to the number of refugees from Ukraine. The Bundeswehr Territorial Task Command examined Berlin’s request, which had been amended four times, and initially confirmed it.

Due to the war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense has issued a so-called reservation of decision for requests for administrative assistance from the federal states at the management level. Consequently, the head of the ministry led by Christine Lambrecht (SPD) decides in each individual case.
However, due to the war, the deployment of the 80 soldiers in Berlin is limited in time. “The Bundeswehr is still strongly subject to the ongoing administrative assistance measures in the fight against Corona,” a Defense Ministry spokesman said. “Due to the gaps in training resulting from the two-year administrative assistance due to Corona and, above all, due to the commitment of the forces in connection with the war in Ukraine, the funds of the Bundeswehr are currently limited.”
