As part of Egypt’s efforts to boost the tourism and hotel services sector, the first steps have been taken to bring the historic “Shepherd” Hotel back to life.
The Egyptian Minister of the Business Public Sector, Hisham Tawfiq, witnessed the signing ceremony of the management and operation contract for the Shepheard Hotel, which is one of the oldest hotels in Cairo.
The contract was concluded with the international “Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group” in cooperation between the company “Al-Sharif Tourism and Hotels”, which is affiliated with the Holding Group “Al-Sharif” of Saudi Arabia, and the company “Egoth”, the which is affiliated with the Holding Company of Tourism and Hotels, one of the companies of the Ministry of the Business Public Sector.
The Minister of the Public Business Sector explained that this contract is part of the ministry’s plan to develop its affiliated hotels, whether historical or contemporary, since a cooperation had taken place between the company EGOTH, owner of the Shepheard Hotel, and Saudi Sharif Holding Group . , to develop the Shepheard Hotel with an investment cost of 1.4 billion pounds, while raising it to Five-star level, and today the hotel is signed under the international brand “Mandarin Oriental”, to be the first hotel in Egypt to carry this distinguished brand.
He added that the development project, which is due to be completed in 2024, aims to increase hotel capacity by constructing an annex building with the same height as the current hotel in the administrative rear of the building, which has been completed and removed. . building lacks parking spaces, in addition to adding a set of hotel rooms, specialized services and restaurants, and a new swimming pool.
As explained by Nawaf bin Fayez Al Sharif, CEO of the Saudi group “Al Sharif”: “The group’s belief in the tourism sector, and with an eye on the future, we signed in 2020 a 35-year agreement with the Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels (EGOTH) to finance, develop and operate the Shepheard Hotel. We are in Cairo, and we are proud to undertake the development project of this historic building in the ancient land of Egypt.”
While Fayez bin Abdel Hakim Al Sharif, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the “Al Sharif” Group, stated that the group aspires to create a distinguished relationship and be an example in the Egyptian market, and now we are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to manage the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo and which is being developed to its unique global, historical and cultural specifications.
The CEO of the Egyptian General Company of Tourism and Hotels “EGOTH” stated that within the framework of the fruitful cooperation between the company and Saudi Sharif Holding Group, the former historical value of the “Shepheard” Hotel and its high level will be revived. to five stars to be an attraction for international tourism.

It should be noted that the Shepheard Hotel is one of the oldest historical hotels in Egypt, it was founded in 1841 and was located in the Azbakeya neighborhood and was burnt down during the Cairo fire, the current Shepheard Hotel was rebuilt in the Garden City area in front of the Nile River, which is listed as one of the oldest hotels regionally.
The Saudi company Al-Sharif has been developing and restoring it since 2020 with an investment of 90 million dollars, and the participation of the French designer Sybil de Margerie, who seeks to preserve the spirit of the old building, while improving facilities and services. modern. in this process, and is expected to reopen in 2024.
Just as the historic hotel witnessed important events, stages and great changes in Egyptian society, “Shepherd” will be on a date with a new stage, in which cooperation -for the first time in Egypt- with the “Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group”, the owner and operator of the world’s most luxurious hotels and resorts, which has been awarded Grand Prizes and operates 34 hotels and 7 apartment complexes in 24 countries.
