MADRID, July 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The natural resources available for all of 2022 will end this Thursday, July 28, Earth Overcapacity Day, leaving the planet in the red by the end of the year, according to a WWF complaint indicates year they would be necessary resources that 1.75 earth can provide.

In just over 200 days, humans have used up the natural capital available 365 days a year, which exceeds the ability of ecosystems to regenerate by 74 percent.

The NGO points out that not all countries have the same consumption of natural resources as Qatar would need 9 planets compared to 5.1 in the United States; 2.8 planets that Spain needs, a far cry from the 0.3 that Yemen needs.

Spain went into debt to the planet on May 12, a date 13 days ahead of 2021, and WWF is concerned the date will be further brought forward both nationally and internationally.

Earth Overshoot Day is the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the earth can regenerate in that year. This date is calculated by the Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that offers decision-makers a set of tools to help the human economy operate within the Earth’s ecological limits by analyzing the global evolution of two parameters: biocapacity (or biological regenerative capacity ) and ecological footprint (our resource requirements).

The Nature Conservation Director of WWF Spain, Enrique Segovia, has stressed that the Day of Overcapacity is a reminder that the current production and consumption model is one of the main causes of the destruction of nature and the climate crisis, for which he calls on world leaders to act to fight back “urgently and courageously” take the necessary measures to reverse the situation.

“We can all help stop the ecological deficit by making better choices in our daily lives,” he encouraged.
