  • The creators of the series explain why the Second Age is so exciting and why it needs a new group of companions.
  • A new Lord of the Rings special has also been released that goes even further behind the scenes.

The first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022. The new fantasy series is a prequel to Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films. The series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, more than 3000 years before the movies.

In a new making-of, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay explain why they think the Second Age has stories worth telling. Above all, they explain that they have formed a new community, because what would a Tolkien story be without a group of companions?

Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark also has her say. She succeeds Cate Blanchett, who played the role in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Clark is not alone, as other characters from the films also return, such as Elrond.

But the series also brings to life characters from Tolkien’s Legendarium that we’ve never seen in a movie or series before. The American magazine Entertainment Weekly also published a special on the characters!
