The late Bob Saget forgotten at the Oscars

It is one of the most emotional moments of the Oscars when the names of the deceased actors are read. But this year there was a surprising omission.

The “In Memoriam” at the Oscars was a little different than usual this year. Celebrities were allowed to share their very personal memories of the late Hollywood greats. Jamie Lee Curtis remembered Betty White, Tyler Perry spoke about the great influence of Sidney Portier and Bill Murray said goodbye to “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman. While the really sad part of the Oscars was a bit more entertaining this time around, it caused a lot of outrage among many fans. Because a deceased star was completely missing.

More than “Full House”

In this country, most people should know Bob Saget as the loving father from the television series “Full House.” Saget played single father Danny Tanner in eight seasons of the hit sitcom from 1987 to 1995. From 2016 to 2020, five more seasons followed on Netflix under the title “Fuller House.” However, in the US, Saget was also known as a comedian, director (“Dirty Work”), and screenwriter. He provided the narration for the original How I Met Your Mother and has appeared as host or in cameos in numerous productions. On January 9 of this year, the 65-year-old man was found dead in a hotel near Orlando. The cause of death is suspected to be a head injury, which the actor thought was harmless. His death had caused outrage around the world.

But when the names of the deceased actors were read out at this year’s Academy Awards, Saget was inexplicably absent. He himself won a student Oscar in 1978 for his documentary Through Adam’s Eyes. In the short film, Saget tells the story of his nephew, who must undergo surgery for a genetic defect.

Fans want to ‘cancel’ the Oscars

For that reason alone, Saget deserved a mention. Still, fans in front of the screens were horrified that the popular star was left out of the Oscars. “I’m rebelling because Bob Saget wasn’t at In Memoriam,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another fan tweeted: “I don’t know about you but the biggest controversy for me is…the Academy Awards leaving Bob Saget out of the ‘In Memoriam’ part.”

Other users half-jokingly called for the Oscars to be canceled entirely for skipping Saget. And many fans posted a portrait of the actor to at least give him a proper memorial. The Academy Awards have not yet released a statement on why Bob Saget was not honored.
