The boss who really tries to understand the problems of his employees has already taken the first step.

Whether a conversation with the boss is enjoyable and useful often depends on the manager. Everyone has probably walked out of a meeting at some point and promised themselves that one day, if they ever become a manager, they will do it differently.

But what are the skills that such superiors lack? According to executive coach Thomas Koulopoulos, the most important quality of a good boss is empathy: “The hardest part of my coaching with founders and CEOs is getting them to stop talking, shut up and listen,” he wrote in USA. USA business magazine “Inc”. In addition, managers not only have to listen, but also learn to understand the statements of their employees, explains Koulopoulos.

If you’re already a boss or want to be, we’ve listed the four qualities Koulopoulos says makes a good manager. Or you can use the following ideas to assess whether your current or future manager is one you can learn from and who creates a pleasant work atmosphere.

1. The manager practices empathy instead of selfishness

“We often think of empathy as something someone naturally has,” the coach writes. But being an empath is something you can learn and improve on.

Practice it by trying to really understand your employees. For example, you can get into the habit of repeating the employee’s complaints in summary form. Koulopoulos calls this tactic “active listening.” Firstly, you are forced to listen carefully, secondly, you avoid misunderstandings, and thirdly, you give the employee the feeling of being truly understood.

2. The leader accepts that there are some things he does not know better

Just because you’re on the executive floor doesn’t mean you have to be omniscient. In fact, there will be some employees who know the group better than you or who have expert knowledge in certain subject areas.

According to Koulopoulos, as a boss you don’t have to demonstrate intellectual superiority to be respected by your employees, quite the contrary. Even if you have a different opinion on an issue, you must first convey your agreement to your employee. Doing so removes the fear of feeling attacked on his authority and promotes the employee’s confidence. Your communication will be relaxed and you will be able to analyze the respective problem more closely together. In this way, you also benefit directly from the experience of your employee.

3. The manager is patient with himself

No one becomes a different person overnight. “If you want to learn empathy, you also have to learn to sit still when others ask you for advice and guide them to answers instead of feeling responsible for giving them an immediate response.”

Take the time to deal with problems. No doubt your employees would prefer you to provide them with thoughtful solution suggestions rather than quick fixes.

Get different perspectives to get to the bottom of a problem. You are not an oracle who has to read perfect solutions from coffee grounds. Instead, you can use the voices and knowledge of your employees to find the best possible solution.

4. The leader allows his employees new perspectives and approaches

Once you learn to listen and understand, it only takes one small step to become a leader everyone enjoys meeting. In conversations, try to show your employees new perspectives on how they can solve problems and master tasks. You are showing how well you have understood the employee’s problem, and at the same time, you are helping them by broadening their horizons and allowing them to develop their own solutions that are better suited to them.

If you take all of this seriously, your employees will accept you not only because you’re the boss, but also because of your leadership qualities, which make everyday life in the office easier, writes Koulopoulos. Employees would then not only respect you, but also support you with conviction.
