Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz continues to reject the rapid accession of Ukraine to the EU. “It is very important that we continue with the things that we have decided in the past,” Scholz said Thursday ahead of an EU summit in Versailles, France.

Scholz referred to the association agreement that the EU and Ukraine concluded in 2017, which aims to deepen political and economic relations. “That is the path we must follow.”

Furthermore, Scholz alluded to the fact that with 27 states, it was already difficult to make unanimous decisions in the EU, for example, on foreign, economic and financial policy issues. The EU must continue to develop perspectives “when making decisions, make majority decisions possible”.

In view of the Russian war against his country, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, applied last week to join the EU and requested a special procedure. However, joining the EU is a long and complicated process. Furthermore, all EU states must agree. (dpa)
