Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and High Technology of the United Arab Emirates and General Director of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, said at the launch of the bidding phase of the Zayed Sustainability Prize 2023: “For the past 14 years, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has achieved its goal of recognizing and rewarding the achievements of those who drive impactful, innovative and inspiring sustainability solutions. We’re building on that and excited to recognize the next pioneers of sustainability who will drive real environmental and social change and make an even bigger positive impact in the world.”

HE Al Jaber added: “Young people continue to be at the heart of the award. We are committed to nurturing even more future sustainability leaders by providing them with a platform through our global high school category to turn their bold ideas into action.”

The Zayed Sustainability Award continues to be a trusted partner and thought leader in international sustainable development. “By amplifying the important work being done around the world in health, energy, nutrition and water, and by facilitating grantees’ implementation of these solutions in vulnerable communities around the world, we have already helped improve the lives of more than 370 million people. ” emphasized HE Al Jaber.

The $3 million Zayed Sustainability Awards will reward winners in each category with $600,000. The Global High Schools category is divided into six winning regions, with each high school receiving up to $100,000 to start or expand their project. The six world regions in the Secondary Schools category are the Americas, Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific.

Inspired by the sustainable and humanitarian legacy of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the award is re-announced. A total of 96 winners have been recognized so far, whose student-led solutions or school projects have positively changed the lives of millions of people.

While the submission forms vary by category, the core elements of each entry lie in the innovative, impactful, and inspiring ways in which the proposed technologies, applications, and solutions create positive change in people’s lives for the better. In the areas of health, food, energy and water, organizations must demonstrate that they improve access to essential products or services and have a long-term vision to improve living and working conditions. In the Global High Schools category, projects must be student-led, with an emphasis on active student participation in planning, implementation, and monitoring.

The Zayed Sustainability Award is structured according to a three-stage evaluation process that begins with due diligence by an independent research and analysis company. Qualifying contributions are determined and award-worthy candidates are selected. The evaluation is then carried out by category-specific selection committees made up of independent international experts. Finalists are selected from this list and sent to the award jury, who select the winners in all five categories by unanimous vote.

The winners will be announced at an award ceremony during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).
