Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly donated $10 million to the Ukrainian military. Although the news has yet to be confirmed, the actor is being hailed as a hero online.

It was special news reported by Ukrainian state television on Monday, citing various online media: Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio had donated ten million US dollars “for the needs of the army”. The news was broadcast by the “Visegrád 24” portal, which specializes in news from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

“Visegrád 24” cites family connections as the reason for the generous donation: DiCaprio’s maternal grandmother was born Elena Stepanova Smirnova in 1915 in the Ukrainian city of Odessa. In 1917 she emigrated to Germany with her parents and took the name Helena Indenbirken.

Also skepticism and criticism.

From time to time, however, people are skeptical of the message: “It was an informant who threw it away, not Leo himself,” emphasizes one commenter on Twitter. The Oscar winner (“The Revenant”), on the other hand, has been attacked by supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin: He may have “gone crazy”, they say, and supports “neo-Nazis”.

It has already been officially confirmed that other celebrities will donate large sums to the victims of the war: American actress Mila Kunis, born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and her husband Ashton Kutcher donated three million US dollars. In addition, they want to raise another $30 million through an online platform. The money will benefit Ukrainian refugees. ‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling has pledged to donate £1m to help Ukrainian children and young people in need. Queen Elizabeth II also made a private donation.
