Dave Grohl-led group says members are ‘devastated’ and Hawkins’ ‘musical spirit’ will live on

Taylor Hawkins, the longtime drummer for the rock band Foo Fighters, has died at the age of 50, the band announced.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” the band’s official account tweeted.

“His musical spirit and infectious laugh will live with us all forever.

“Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect at this unimaginably difficult time.”

The Foo Fighters are touring South America and were due to headline the Festival Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá, Colombia on Friday night, March 25. The festival released a statement on Facebook confirming that the band had pulled out of the three-day festival due to Hawkins’ death. “It is with a broken heart that we are here to bring you some very sad news due to a very serious medical situation, the Foo Fighters are unable to perform tonight and have canceled the remainder of their South American tour.”

After performing in Colombia, Foo Fighters were scheduled to play Lollapalooza Brazil in São Paulo on March 26 before continuing their tour in the United States.

There have been tributes to Hawkins, who played drums for 25 of the Foo Fighters’ 28-year existence after replacing original drummer William Goldsmith in 1997.

Hawkins hailed from Laguna Beach, California and served as a touring drummer for Alanis Morissette and Sass Jordan before joining the Foo Fighters. He landed his first major role as a drummer in the experimental band Sylvia.

Musicians, friends and fans took to social media to express their shock at his sudden passing.

After Foo Fighters founder and frontman Dave Grohl, Hawkins was probably the most prominent member of the group, regularly appearing alongside Grohl in interviews and playing roles in the band’s videos.

He also starred in the recently released Foo Fighters horror-comedy film Studio 666, in which a demonic force in a house the gang is staying in takes hold of Grohl and turns him into a murderer.

In the film, Hawkins and other members of the gang – Pat Smear, Rami Jaffee, Chris Shiflett and Nate Mendel – are killed one by one. The film’s premise stemmed from his work on his tenth studio album in a house in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.

Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana when Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994. Hawkins was survived by his wife, Alison, and their three children.
