GENEVA – After a system crash at Swiss air traffic control Skyguide, the airspace over Switzerland is open again after being blocked for several hours. Many planes that were to land in Zurich or Geneva have been diverted to neighboring countries since Wednesday morning.

A technical malfunction at Skyguide affected air traffic in and around Switzerland on Wednesday. “We don’t assume a cyberattack,” Skyguide spokesman Vladi Barrosa said. A hardware problem has occurred in the computer network.

All airspace has been closed for security reasons. Not only take-offs and landings, but also overflights did not take place, as Barrosa made clear. He could not quantify the number of flights affected.

The morning wave of European flights between Geneva and Zurich and its surroundings as well as the anticipated arrivals from the United States had to be canceled or diverted.

The flight schedule of the Swiss subsidiary of Lufthansa was particularly affected. “Incoming long-haul flights are currently being diverted to various airports in neighboring countries, including Lyon, Milan and Vienna,” the company said.

Shortly after 9:00 a.m., Skyguide again cleared the sky. In Swiss alone, 70 flights were canceled during the day, affecting around 7,000 passengers.

My God!
– Thousands of people now have to travel by train
– Thousands arrive later
– Thousands of people don’t make their connecting flight, but maybe a day later
– etc..
Just terrible, this Skyguide!

Do you have other helpful articles? Or maybe the statements of an (unknown) Swiss trade unionist on a subject (not related to the article) 😀?
