According to the Kremlin, Russia would only use nuclear weapons in connection with the Ukraine conflict in the event of an “existential threat” to Russia. “We have a concept of internal security, that is well known,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told CNN International on Tuesday. “You can read all the reasons to use nuclear weapons there,” he added.

“So if there is an existential threat to our country, then (the atomic bomb) can be used according to our concept,” Peskow said. The Kremlin spokesman responded to a blunt question from CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour about whether he was “convinced or certain” that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not use a nuclear bomb in the conflict with Ukraine.
