Biden warns of Russian cyberattacks

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has called on American companies to Improve protection against possible cyber attacks from Russia. There is mounting evidence that Russia is evaluating options for possible cyber attacks in response to Western economic sanctions, Biden said Monday. Much of the country’s critical infrastructure is privately owned. Therefore, he called on companies: “You have the power, the capacity and the responsibility to strengthen the cybersecurity and resilience of the critical services and technologies that Americans trust.”

Cyber security adviser Anne Neuberger added: “We are not looking for a conflict with Russia. But if Russia launches a cyber attack against the United States, we will react. There is no certainty that there will be a cyber attack on critical infrastructure. But possible preparations can be seen.

“Critical infrastructure, power, water, many hospitals in the United States are owned by the private sector,” he said. “We believe that the most important people who need to know have received classified information.” This included a few hundred companies. Businesses should use multi-factor authentication on their systems to make it harder for attackers to break in, encrypt their data, and develop contingency plans. (dpa)
