“Rich” Spaniards fell 6.7% to 11,113 in 2020, according to the Treasury

A total of 11,113 taxpayers reported earned income in personal income tax of more than 600,000 euros per year in 2020, down 6.7% from the previous year, according to the latest Personal Income Tax (IRPF) taxpayer statistics the financial year 2020, published by the tax authority.

Despite this decrease, and assuming a very low figure (0.05% of all claimants), between 2007, at the beginning of the previous economic crisis, and the final year of 2020, taxpayers who declared income of more than 600,000 euros fell by 5 % up 10,580 filers who had this income over a decade ago.

In addition, the taxation of these taxpayers has increased from an average of 190,451 euros they paid to the Treasury in 2007 to 195,444 euros they paid in 2020. Compared to fiscal 2019, when they paid an average of 227,529 euros, it fell by 14.1%.

In contrast, most taxpayers (4.33 million, 20% of the total) declared incomes between 12,000 and 21,000 euros and another 4 million, incomes between 30,000 and 60,000 euros (18.9% of the total).

In addition, 3.55 million (16.45%) reported earning between €1,500 and €6,000, while another 3.47 million (16.05%) reported earning between €21,000 and €30,000 per year. Another 2.3 million (10.66%), declared between 6,000 and 12,000 euros.

On his side there were 1.5 million income tax returns (7.1% of the total) in the lowest tier, between 0 and 1,500 euros for the whole year, while a total of 1.4 million returns, 6.6% of the total, were negative or null declaration result.


In the upper part of the table, the taxpayers who declared between 60,000 and 150,000 euros totaled 802,685 people (3.71% of the total) and those who had returns between 150,000 and 600,000 were 103,394 (0.48% of the total) . ).

In this way, and adding those who declare more than 600,000 euros, the group of taxpayers with an income of more than 60,000 euros reached 917,192 in 2020, 0.5% more than in 2019, mainly due to the increase in taxpayers in Range from 60,000 to 150,000 (+1.08%).

According to the statistics of income taxpayers for 2020, a total of 21,638,795 statements were submitted, which is 2.9% more, in a year characterized by the increase in reporting obligations through the temporary employment agency (ERTE) and due to the reporting obligation for all recipients the subsistence level.
