Reports: ‘Taysom Hill’s experiment as a quarterback ended’ for the Saints

After five years of scouting with Taysom Hill playing various roles on offense, it appears the quarterback tryouts have come to an end with the New Orleans Saints. The Athletic’s Larry Holder Joined Michael Fabiano’s Fantasy Dirt Show on Sirius XM and explained that the versatile player “won’t be a part of that conversation” regarding the Saints’ open quarterback job before 2022.

Hill has made 748 snaps at quarterback in the past four seasons with the Saints. He gained momentum as the heir apparent to Drew Brees in 2020 and replaced Jameis Winston in 2021, dealing with various injuries. Hill has a 7-2 win-loss record as a starter. However, it looks like that won’t be enough to convince New Orleans to offer more opportunities as a call sign for the former BYU Cougar. One has to wonder how much Sean Payton’s departure factors into the equation, just as the former Saints coach was a Hill’s champion.

Payton once referred to Hill as a “Steve Young guy” and consistently shared his vote of confidence that he could be a starting quarterback in the NFL. But now, it appears that part of Hill’s career with the team has come to an end. Nola.com’s Luke Johnson also reported a similar story following this year’s NFL scouting matchup. It appears Hill’s role in New Orleans will shift to his pass-catching talents rather than what he himself can offer as a passer, which was reflected in the base value of his contract before a recent restructuring.

This could mean that Hill doesn’t have a chance to contend for the starting job, but it could also mean fewer “Taysom Hill packages” on offense and trading signs throughout games. That could be attractive to an incoming quarterback who doesn’t necessarily want to feel like he’s competing with him all season. After the Saints’ uneasy run on Deshaun Watson over the past week, a clear path ahead at quarterback would be a welcome sight for the franchise.
