The New York Giants are desperate to clear salary-cap space by trading cornerback James Bradberry. They are also desperate for something in return for the veteran, which is why they do not plan to release him.
But things are getting dire for the Giants. The 2022 NFL draft is right around the corner, and the market hasn’t materialized the way New York hoped.
As a result, the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen apparently reevaluated their strategy with Bradberry. And while they’re still reluctant to release him, they’re now willing to eat part of the cornerback’s salary to trade him.
From ESPN’s Jordan Raanan:
Top cornerback James Bradberry is a trade candidate due to an unsustainable salary cap of $21.9 million. Another quality player who will soon be gone. The Giants are so desperate for something in return for the Pro Bowl cornerback that they are willing to eat some of his $13.5 million salary in a trade, a league source told ESPN.
It’s unclear how much of Bradberry’s $13.4 million salary the Giants would be willing to eat up, but it may be necessary to revive their market a bit.
The team would eat up $11.28 million in dead space if Bradberry was designated as released before June 1 and got nothing in return, so there’s at least some financial wiggle room here if it means getting a draft pick in return.
