Onay calls for more commitment from the federal government for refugees
Hannover (dpa/lni) – According to the mayor of Hannover, Belit Onay (Greens), the federal government should be more active in supporting refugees from Ukraine. The federal government should not shy away from responsibility for the coordination and integration of refugees from Ukraine, the politician said in an interview with RTL/ntv television channels on Friday.
“I am firmly convinced, and I think I can say it clearly on behalf of the municipalities: we will do it,” he said. But municipalities need support. Onay said that it was an advantage that people could move freely. But: “That should not relieve the federal government of its responsibility.”
The politician asked for financial support from the federal government and focused coordination for integration courses. “We have to open the integration courses. They are not yet open to people from Ukraine,” Onay said in the interview. In addition, more offers are needed, for example in the area of childcare. “At the moment we are seeing that many women with minor children are coming to Germany.”
