New DNA Comparison: Unknown Dead Man Identified

Hildesheim (dpa / lni) – More than a year after a decomposed body was found near Freden in the district of Hildesheim, the identity of the dead man has been clarified. The Hildesheim police and public prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday that it was a 35-year-old man from the Cologne area. The man’s personal connections to Freden are unknown, and there is no indication of third-party negligence in the man’s death. A renewed search of a DNA database yielded information on the identity of the decomposing, partially skeletonized corpse: a missing person case had been recorded there.

Previously, extensive investigations did not lead to establishing the identity of the deceased. Last October, a facial reconstruction should give clues to the identity of the man of approximately 1.70 meters tall and dark hair. In fact, based on comparative photos of the missing man from Cologne, a resemblance to the reconstructed face can be seen, the researchers said. A hiker discovered the body in a forest in early March 2021.
