The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has entrusted the TRAGSA company with the implementation of the project for the preservation and improvement of the headwaters of the boulevards of the Mar Menor basin, whose activities are part of the principle of comprehensive restoration of the watershed in this one Area.

The project, which has a budget of 2,190,505 euros and an execution period of 36 months, is included in a statement in Action Line 2.2 of the Priority Actions Framework for Salt Lagoon Restoration, according to ministerial sources.

The works consist of the restoration of the hydraulic public area; the disposal of waste in ravines; the elimination of disused structures on the banks of river beds and invasive plant species; ecological restoration of river beds with native species; forest care and maintenance of plantations and the strengthening of the banks of public canals in the Ramblas of Campo de Cartagena and especially in the headwaters.

This action complements the €7,740,038 Environmental Restoration of Mining Boulevards commissioned last week, covering the boulevards of Cartagena’s Mining Hills – Rambla de las Matildes, Rambla del Beal, Barranco de Ponce and Rambla de – Concentrates la Carrasquilla– to reduce contributions to the Mar Menor from solid streams contaminated with heavy metals, fertilizers and pesticides from the Sierra Minera.

In addition, MITECO awarded last week the service to support officials in promoting the procedures for verification of rights and sanctions procedures and other related actions (2.8 million euros), the application of numerical models in the Campo de Cartagena area and support for water quality control (2.5 million).

For example, in the last two weeks, around 15 million euros worth of work has been contracted out in the Campo de Cartagena area to implement the framework for priority actions to restore the Mar Menor.
