The Federal Minister for Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) have asked schools and companies to grant internships to students in their final year. “Anyone who trains today will have the necessary specialists tomorrow,” Heil explained on Wednesday. The ministry noted that the corona pandemic had recently made career guidance, career counseling and finding a training place significantly more difficult.

The common appeal is: Heil and DIHK announced that no young person in the final classes should go on Easter vacation without being accepted for a school internship. The start of the training year is getting closer and many companies are still having trouble finding candidates for their training positions. In addition, young people often lack career guidance, practical training in companies is alien to them.

“On-site internships offer young people the opportunity to experience hands-on vocational training and the real world of work,” explained DIHK President Peter Adrian. This allows young people to develop their strengths, interests and talents and is therefore a win for young professionals and the economy. “Only those who know what they can and want can make an informed career choice and thus become a valuable specialist in the company,” explained Adrian.

According to the Federal Employment Agency, in September 2021, the month for which the latest figures are available, around 511,000 training places were announced nationwide. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to a decrease of around 19,000. There were around 434,000 applicants for the positions. Here the decrease compared to the previous year is around 39,000.
