The Mexican government announced this Thursday that it will pay for the burial and repatriation costs of Mexican citizens who died on June 28 in the abandoned trailer home in the US city of San Antonio, Texas.

The National Migration Institute (INM) detailed in a statement that it maintains “close coordination” with the Department of Foreign Affairs (SRE) authorities to provide care and support to the Mexican families of those who perished “in this tragedy”. .

“The INM, through its representative offices in the states, will maintain communication with the relatives of the Mexican migrants who have suffered so that they can receive the remains of their loved ones and carry out their burial as soon as possible in their places of origin,” the organization announced.

The latest report from US authorities clarifies that 22 of the 53 people killed in the incident were Mexican nationals, a fact lamented by Mexican President Manuel Andrés López Obrador last Wednesday.

“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the families of Mexican, Honduran and Guatemalan migrants who suffocated in a trailer. It is a great misfortune that this happened in San Antonio, Texas,” he said in his daily press briefing.

For its part, Mexican prosecutors announced last Thursday that they, in cooperation with the US Department of Homeland Security, have launched an investigation into what is already one of the deadliest incidents at the Mexico-US border related to emigration. .
