“Globally, approximately 18 million acres (nearly 7.3 million hectares) of forest cover are lost each year to wildfires, insects, disease, climate change, etc,” said Deborah Gibbins, chief operating officer of Mary Kay Inc. “The need for “reforestation projects is great. Mary Kay has a presence in markets around the world, so we must do everything we can to protect them. Our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation allows us to provide a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
The latest Mary Kay Tree Report, linked to MaryKayGlobal.com, lists three cumulative benefits that have accrued from planting the trees as part of the collaboration so far.
CO2: Planting, protecting and caring for trees fixes CO2. As trees grow, CO2 is drawn from the atmosphere and stored in the trunks, roots, and branches.
Water: Trees and forests play a crucial role in the quality and quantity of water. Healthy trees and forests retard soil erosion, filter stormwater and agricultural irrigation, improve rainwater infiltration, and reduce surface runoff
Air: Trees produce the oxygen we breathe. In addition, trees reduce air pollution by lowering air temperatures, releasing water into the atmosphere, and acting as particulate filters.
In 2021, Mary Kay Inc. completed six major planting projects in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. These included the following:
7,000 trees as part of a forest fire recovery project in an indigenous region of Brazil
26,496 trees in the Mississippi Valley
49,004 trees at the US Air Force Base in Tyndall, Florida
7,500 trees in the Chinese province of Gansu and in the forests of Inner Mongolia
5,000 trees in the Cajamarca and Amazonas regions of Peru
5,000 trees in forests for insect protection in Germany.
In 2022, Mary Kay plans plantations in China, Brazil, Madagascar and Florida.
In addition to partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation, Mary Kay served as executive producer of forest of hope, a documentary about the fight to protect our planet from the imminent threats of climate change and destructive human behavior. In partnership with Media One and The Nature Conservancy, Mary Kay visited a group of women entrepreneurs in the Mexican city of Monterrey focused on replanting a local tree species with its own ecosystem. The film was released in 2021 and will be screened at upcoming film festivals.
