“Kiev and Moscow need to talk”
Scholz and Macron speak on the phone with Putin
For a long time, the president of France has been the only European head of state with whom Russian President Putin has spoken since the war. Chancellor Scholz is now also taking part in a phone call. Along with Macron, he stresses that Kiev and Moscow must negotiate peace directly.
Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz and French Head of State Emmanuel Macron have stressed the importance of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Any solution to the crisis must be found in talks between the two countries, the two said in an hour-long phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the morning, according to the Elysee Palace.
Scholz and Macron again called for an immediate ceasefire by Russia. The three leaders decided to keep in close contact for the next few days. Russia began its attack on Ukraine two weeks ago. Since then, negotiators have repeatedly talked about a temporary ceasefire.
The first high-level negotiation attempt between Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov took place in Antalya, Turkey this morning. However, the meeting did not bring any significant progress. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter that he had spoken with Scholz about the course of the “peace talks”. It is important to increase the pressure of sanctions on Russia.
According to Élysée, the war in Ukraine and the next steps associated with it will also be a topic at the summit of EU heads of state and government, which begins Thursday night in Versailles, France.
