Japan fears the war in Ukraine will have a “domino effect” on China’s Pacific ambitions

The Defense Ministry’s annual document does not rule out increasing operational capabilities against the North Korean threat

The Japanese Ministry of Defense notes with concern that the war in Ukraine could embolden China “to break the ‘status quo’ and solidify its territorial ambitions in the Pacific, beginning with its historic claim on Taiwan,” according to the conclusions of its annual strategy report .

“The Russian challenge to the international order is not only a problem for Europe. China continues to try to unilaterally change the situation in the region,” said Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi in the introduction to the report, which he recalled Beijing-Moscow relations.

“If Russian aggression is allowed, the false impression is created that unilateral changes to the ‘status quo’ can also take place in other regions without authorization,” the report, published on Friday, says.

Stability in Taiwan, according to the document, “is important not only for Japan’s security but also for the stability of the international community.” Although Japan and Taiwan have no formal diplomatic ties, they work together on a wide range of areas, and as in previous reports, Japan regards the island as a “very important ally and dear friend.”

The report also highlights the possibility that Japan can increase its defense capabilities against the North Korean threat, and even considers acquiring “counter-attack assets” as a more vigorous containment measure not only against China but also against North Korea.

“Japan has been developing a ballistic missile defense system for some time, but we are considering all options as we formulate a new national security strategy based on whether we can truly protect the lives and livelihoods of our citizens simply by upgrading our capabilities. of interception,” the document warns.
