At least five people were killed and eight injured when a glacier ruptured on Mount Marmolada. The mountain rescue team has carried out a large-scale operation in the Dolomites – and are looking for other buried people.

During a huge glacial break on the Marmolada mountain in the Dolomites, several climbers were hit by masses of ice, snow and rock. At least five people died as a result. This was announced by the rescue control center of the Veneto region.

According to initial findings, two roped parties were affected. 15 hikers were reportedly swept away by the avalanche. Mountain rescue spokesman Walter Milan said it was unclear how many people were at the scene.

The heat increases the snow cover

At least eight people were injured after the crash in northern Italy and airlifted to hospitals, the Veneto region’s rescue control center said. The search for other victims is still ongoing, according to the mountain rescue service. The rescue services were on site with five helicopters and several dog squads.

It was only on Saturday that the highest temperature ever measured at the top of the Marmolada was ten degrees Celsius. Experts say the snowpack is far too thin for the time of year due to the persistent heat. In the Veneto region, temperatures have been well above 30 degrees for days. The Marmolada (Italian Marmolada) is the highest mountain in the Dolomites at 3343 meters above sea level.
