Tayfun Korkut is no longer the manager of Hertha BSC. Unsurprisingly, the Berlin Bundesliga team announced the split from Korkut on Sunday. His assistant Ilja Aracic also has to go. A successor is still unknown.

The night before, his team suffered its fifth loss in a row with a 0-2 (0-1) loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Before the meeting, Fredi Bobic, Hertha’s sporting director, had demanded that the team and coach score points against their rivals in the relegation battle. This is not functional. Due to the loss, Hertha moved from the relegation spot into a direct relegation zone.

They analyzed the performance and results of the nine games in the second half of the season and then made the decision “To make another change in the coaching position,” Bobic said. “We are currently in a relegation zone. There are still eight games left to add the points needed to stay on top. We will do everything possible to achieve this, and with this decision we want to help everyone involved to be even more sensitive to the situation and trust in the positive effects of a new beginning.”

Korkut, 47, served just 105 days in office. At the end of November he replaced Pal Dardai, whom Bobic no longer believed capable of further developing the team. Hertha were 14th in the table and five points clear of the first direct relegation zone. In a club statement, Korkut is quoted as saying: “Unfortunately, for various reasons, we were unable to maintain the good start of our work. I would like to thank them for the trust and the always open cooperation and wish the whole Hertha family relegation and all the best for the future”.

Bobic’s plan failed miserably. In 13 games under Korkut, Hertha scored only nine points, plus the painful end of the DFB Cup round of 16 against local rivals 1. FC Union. This year, Hertha are still without a win in ten competitive matches. With just two points, the team is the worst second-round team in the Bundesliga. (More to come.)
