It is not unusual or even uncommon to feel cold after exercising. However, you do not have to worry too much, that has already been said. Because in most cases there are quite simple explanations for this phenomenon. Are you interested in the possible antecedents and how you can relatively easily prevent a feeling of cold after exercise? Well, come on.

Freezing after running: does it depend on the seasons?

If you occasionally feel cold after running in winter, this may be due to low temperatures. Then it’s time to warm up quickly, take off your sweaty running clothes, shower and change into dry clothes.

But maybe you have already experienced it in the summer or just when the temperatures are nice, icy after running? Some runners in Torsten’s Facebook groups have already reported this phenomenon. Therefore, it can happen (depending on how intense our training has been and how trained we are) that our body still “sweats” after the end of the training; You have surely heard or read this term at one time or another. So our body continues to cool down and the sweat on our skin can freeze us.

A measure to slowly prepare your body for the end of the training session and to counteract the process just mentioned is a cool down. Regardless of the training session, this is recommended anyway. So for you it should always be in your training program.

A cooldown means you don’t end your run abruptly, but instead let it end slowly. For example, after interval training, you can continue running for a bit at a slow pace that is very comfortable for you, almost like “going out.” This way you give your body a chance to slowly regulate itself again.

Stretching exercises or a short, relaxed round of yoga can also be recommended, as trainer Beatrice Drach advised in an Endurance Blog group. In winter, one thing is particularly important: when it’s cold outside, be sure to head inside for some stretching or a short yoga session after your workout. This prevents a cold.

Foods containing so-called simple carbohydrates (so-called monosaccharides), for example glucose and fructose, are particularly suitable for this purpose. These enter the bloodstream faster.

Adequate water intake is also important. The more balanced the fluid balance, the better our body is able to regulate core temperature. On the other hand, if we consume less fluid than we excrete, the osmolality of the blood increases and blood pressure falls.

You should also dress warmly and smartly in winter. As a runner, you can go for the so-called “onion look” and wear several layers on top of each other. If it gets too hot during your training session, you can simply take off your sweater or training jacket and tie it around your waist. This will prevent you from sweating too much. You should also make sure to always change into something dry after your workout when you’re sweaty. So that you do not get cold and do not catch a cold. You can take a hot shower at home.

Therefore, feeling cold after exercising can arise due to several rather harmless and harmless reasons:

  • Thermoregulation of your body, keyword: sweating.
