A dozen major school construction projects will have to be tackled in Berlin-Mitte in the coming years. What they are and how the ambitious goal will be achieved was made public on Friday by the city’s new education councillor, Stefanie Remlinger (Greens).

She wants four out of six city council members to be directly involved in the district’s school building offensive. In addition to Remlinger himself, there are the district mayor Stefan von Dassel and the councilor for the environment and green spaces Almut Neumann (both green). Building councilor Ephraim Gothe is one of them from the SPD. He has already fired the starting gun.

Under Remlinger’s leadership, the management of the school building offensive in Mitte is to be addressed by the city councilors in all departments in the “Taskforce Schulbau Mitte”. A steering group will meet for this purpose.

As reported, it is being coordinated by former Secretary of State for Education Mark Rackles (SPD) and the head of Mitte’s education department. The steering group must implement the decisions of the task force and the district office.

“This steering group must work in a transparent and highly results-oriented manner, is accountable to the task force and serves as a clear contact for state-level actors,” Remlinger explained.

Time is of the essence, especially given dismal construction work at places like the Anna Lindh School with mold in the basement. There is enough to do, as Remlinger explained.

  • Schulstrasse Gym: expected completion 2027/2028, implementation: Senate Department of Urban Development
  • Primary school on Adalbertstraße: Expected completion in 2024, implementation: Senate Department of Urban Development

“A minimum level of security in planning”

“By combining forces and working closely together, we hope to see a significant improvement in cooperation and a significant acceleration of decisions that are necessary for the rapid planning and implementation of projects,” Remlinger said, describing his goals.

In addition, the structure allows transparent and regular information for the district public and schools. The school authority will provide a periodic bulletin with the most important information.

Remlinger hopes that the school building offensive will eventually become a real offensive in Mitte as well. It would not be possible to “satisfy all needs and desires at the same time and immediately”, but “we can promise that the available funds will be used as quickly as possible and efficiently”, said the Councilor for Green Education.

Good intentions also include making construction and renovation prioritization transparent. Every school should be guaranteed “a minimum level of urban safety.”
