From an adventure on the road to a cult romance to a blockbuster precursor, these films are undeniably associated with summer.

Unforgettable holiday flirtations, adventures with friends or a road trip you will remember all your life – summer has many highlights. These films address these and other topics and can currently be streamed on various platforms.

“Stand by Me – The Secret of a Summer”

The 1986 Coming of Age Adventure “Stand by Me – The Secret of a Summer” by Rob Reiner (75) is not considered a classic for nothing. It tells the story of four friends who go in search of the body of a missing boy. However, no horrific shock awaits viewers, even though the film is based on the short story “The Body” by Stephen King (74). We see stars like Kiefer Sutherland (55), John Cusack (56) or River Phoenix (1970-1993), who died much too early. The movie is currently streaming on Wow.

Fatih Akin (48) has often demonstrated his love of storytelling with his works. When hearing the name of the director and the key word “Summer”, most people will certainly think of the entertaining road movie “Im Juli” with Moritz Bleibtreu (50 years old) and Christiane Paul (48 years old) from the year 2000. But also the film adaptation of the best-selling “Chick” by Wolfgang Herrndorf (1965-2013) was directed by Akin. With a “borrowed” Lada, young Maik and his new classmate Andrej “Tschick” Chichatschow embark on a journey through the summer – and thus on an adventure that almost every 14-year-old would wish for. Both titles are currently available on Disney+.

“Hot Dance”

Anyone who hears the song “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” inevitably thinks of “Hot Dance”. Not only has the success of the soundtrack kept viewers having a blast since 1987 – at least if they’re into romance. “Baby” falls in love with her dance teacher Johnny during the holidays and “even though everyone is against them, they are powerless against this love,” says the trailer for the cult film. Jennifer Gray (62) rose to world fame in her role as Frances “Baby” Houseman, Patrick Swayze (1952-2009) cemented her idol status as Johnny Castle. “Dirty Dancing” is currently streaming through the bookable channel “Cinema of Hearts” on Amazon Prime Video.

“Call Me By Your Name”

“Call Me By Your Name” tells the story of 17-year-old Elio who, in the summer of 1983, in northern Italy, meets Oliver, who spends several weeks as a research assistant to the father of Elio. The two discover their feelings for each other, which blossom into a sultry romance. The film by Luca Guadagnino (50) allowed Timothée Chalamet (26), who can be seen alongside Armie Hammer (35), to break into Hollywood in 2017. He was also nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role as Elio. is actually “Call Me By Your Name” available on Netflix.

“The White Shark”

If only because of its importance for the whole world of cinema “The White Shark” not absent from this selection. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic (75), in which a monstrous shark terrorizes bathers, defined the much-used meaning of the term “blockbuster” in the context of today’s movies. Crowds literally lined up to get a movie ticket for the lavish production. The “Guinness Book of Records” also lists “Jaws”, hence the original title, as the first “hit film of the summer”. “Jaws” can currently be seen on Wow.
