FDP demands therapy dogs to support witnesses and processes
Hannover (dpa / lni) – The FDP parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament is campaigning for a pilot project in which therapy dogs are used in psychosocial testimony and process support. In particular, children and young people who have been victims of violent and sexual crimes could be accompanied in criminal proceedings, the spokesman for legal policy of the FDP parliamentary group, Marco Genthe, justified a corresponding request on Thursday.
Baden-Württemberg has been using specially trained dogs in this area since 2019 to support witnesses between the ages of four and 16 who are involved in investigations or prosecutions for violence, abuse or homicide. Dogs have a very positive influence on children,” says Genthe. The aim is to enable the acceptance of help and reliable witness statements, since those affected are often predisposed to dealing with others, especially strangers.
