Berlin, March 18, 2022 – Do I have to take medicine for high cholesterol levels or can I also lower levels with lifestyle changes? Many people who are affected by high cholesterol ask this question. Health Knowledge Foundation analyzed the study data on individual diet and exercise programs and explained who could make a lifestyle change.

High cholesterol levels are a widespread disease in Germany. A data collection by the Robert Koch Institute from 2008 to 2011 shows that in Germany almost 60 percent are affected by what is known as hypercholesterolemia. The disease is usually asymptomatic at first. Therefore, those affected are often unaware of the health risk for a long time. However, permanently elevated cholesterol levels promote the development of cardiovascular diseases and must be treated. In many cases, medications are also used for treatment, e.g. B. the so-called statins used. These have been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, many of those affected wonder if a change in lifestyle is not enough to lower the level of cholesterol in the blood.
