Negotiations to save the nuclear agreement with Iran are suspended after new demands from Russia. “A pause in the Vienna talks is necessary due to external factors,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote on Twitter on Friday.. Essentially, an agreement has already been worked out and is on the table.

Shortly before a possible breakthrough in negotiations to restore the 2015 nuclear deal, Russia demanded assurances about a week ago that Western sanctions related to the Ukraine invasion would not hamper economic and military ties between Iran and Russia. Washington and European states have rejected the request, saying they have nothing to do with the nuclear talks.

The agreement that was reached provides for the United States to lift its sanctions against Iran. In exchange, the Islamic Republic will once again severely restrict its nuclear program to prevent the development of nuclear weapons. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Thursday that some issues remained to be resolved, an indication that Russia’s position is not the only remaining hurdle.
