According to Ukrainian information, Russia wants to organize a referendum on the founding of an independent “people’s republic” in the occupied city of Cherson. This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Twitter on Saturday.

Kuleba said that the referendum would be completely rigged because there was no popular support for it. If Russia goes ahead with this, severe sanctions would have to follow. “Kherson is and always will be in Ukraine.”

Cherson, located near the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, was the first major city in Ukraine to be seized by the Russian army after a three-day siege in early March. 290,000 people live in the port city.

The human rights commissioner in the Ukrainian parliament, Lyudmila Denizova, wrote on the online service Telegram that the occupiers are in the process of organizing support for the referendum in the city hall. She stressed that such voting is illegal. After Crimea’s annexation in 2014, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin also held a referendum there, which Kiev and the West consider illegal. (AFP)
