Selenskyj describes the situation as “very difficult”

Despite some military successes, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy the situation in his country remains tense. He said that in his nightly video speech, which was posted on Telegram on Tuesday night. Ukrainian defenders could have pushed back Russian units from the city of Irpin, near kyiv, he said. However, fighting continued there and in other parts of the country.

Russian troops controlled the northern kyiv region and had resources and forces, Zelenskyy said. They tried to rebuild shattered units. The situation also remains “very difficult” in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donbass and southern Ukraine regions.

Selenskyj again called for tougher sanctions against Russia. Regarding an embargo on Russian oil supplies being discussed in Europe, he said there are now many indications that such a tightening of sanctions against Russia will only take place if Moscow uses chemical weapons. “There are no words for that,” Zelenskyj said. “Think how far it has come. Waiting for chemical weapons,” he said, asking if everything Russia has done so far deserves such an embargo. He did not elaborate on the origin of these clues.

A group of Ukrainian and international experts will be established this week at the Presidential Office in kyiv to continuously analyze the sanctions against Russia and their effects. (dpa)
