MADRID, June 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish duo, made up of Emma García and Pau Ribes, made their debut this Saturday at the Budapest Aquatics Championships in fourth place after playing the mixed technical duo preliminary round, staying half a point off the podium they will be trying to reach on this Monday in the final.

After the absence of Russia, punished by international competitions for invading Ukraine, Emma García and Pau Ribes came in search of a surprise in the preliminary round after favorites Italy, who bid for gold with their 88.5734 points.

However, the Spanish pair ended up in fourth place with 84.3709 points, just half a point behind Asian giants Japan and China. Chinese pairing Yiyao Zhang and Hayou Shi completed the podium along with Japan’s Tomoka Sato and Yotaro Sako with 85.8086 points.

The champions of the preliminary round were the Italians with a very clean round by the experienced Giordio Minissini and his “dance partner” Lucrezia Ruggiero, the favorites to win the gold this Monday. Emma and Pau showed their skills, leaving powerhouses like the United States far behind. In this way, the Spanish couple will try to beat Japan and China in the final, their direct competitors for the medals.

“Very happy from minute zero. During the whole choreography I felt very close to Emma. Then at the end we saw four small things that we will check in the video, but on the level of power and timing a big step. If .” We balance and improve the last part of the exercise, we don’t exclude anything,” said Pau Ribes after finishing fourth, who shared with his partner that the goal was “to get past China in the final”.

For her part, Emma García recognized that taking part in the World Cup has different appeal than other competitions. “We are very confident with this choreography (Hansel and Gretel), we have swum it many times and feel very comfortable. We will give everything again to regain the tenths that our Chinese rivals are taking away from us,” said the swimmer.
