SOUTHFIELD, MI, USA, March 23, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Power management company Eaton today announced that its Vehicle Group has celebrated 50 years of MLocker production®-Celebrate the differentials. The mechanical limited-slip differential gives passengers superior traction without buttons, shift knobs or other driver input. It can be used in both internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles (Electrified Vehicles, EVs).

“We are pleased to mark this important milestone for the MLocker differential, which builds on the success of the previous model, our popular Posi differential,” said Mark Kramer, vice president of ePowertrain at Eaton’s Vehicle Group designs and proven quality, the MLocker differential is the differential of choice for full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles around the world, and even for a recently launched electrified city van in the Asia Pacific region.”

Advances in innovation in original equipment

Using an independent, automatic locking mechanism, the MLocker differential engages low drive when a wheel speed difference (compared to the other rear wheel) of 100 revolutions per minute (RPM) or more is detected. Automatic locking occurs in less than a fraction of a second, increasing traction and giving the driver greater safety and confidence when driving on wet or icy roads, gravel, mud or unpaved surfaces. The MLocker differential is also compatible with existing vehicle stability systems and anti-lock brakes. This simplifies OEM integration.

Under normal driving conditions, the MLocker differential works as a limited slip differential with a slight preload. When a low traction situation occurs that causes a speed difference between the wheels, a flywheel mechanism opens and engages a locking bracket. This engages a self-energizing clutch system until both axles are turning at the same speed (fully locked), preventing further wheel slippage. Unlocking occurs automatically and the differential gear resumes normal operation.

The MLocker differential has been modified during its long production run, but the basic design and concept remain the same.

“Functionally it is the same design; however, we have made many improvements over the years. Our original concept has stood the test of time, while continually being improved to meet the needs of the industry,” said Keith E. Morgensai, a technical professional who has been involved in the design and development of MLocker for more than 40 years – contributes Differentials.

“It’s deceptively simple, but there’s a lot of engineering involved in its development,” Morgensai said.

Since the launch of the MLocker differential, the Eaton Vehicle Group has continued to expand its differential gear portfolio with solutions for all user profiles.

Eaton’s full line of differentials now includes:

  • Detroit Locker® Differential – A fully automatic locking differential that provides maximum traction for light and heavy duty vehicle applications. It is specially designed to keep both wheels in drive mode even if one wheel lifts off the ground.

  • ELocker® Differential: A highly developed unit that allows maximum flexibility in the drive train. Users can change from a fully open to a fully locked spindle with the push of a button. Forged body and four pinion gearbox provide additional strength and capability.

  • Posi® Differential – A locking differential that automatically stops wheelspin before you can start. Easily integrates into most shaft designs and can be tailored to specific application requirements.

Eaton also recently announced that the company’s Torque Control Systems business has launched a broad line of specialty differentials for electric vehicles with performance comparable to differentials used in vehicles powered by conventional internal combustion engines.

With the increasing shift to EVs in the passenger car market, Eaton has the right experience and expertise to deliver the solutions required by EV manufacturers.

Eaton’s line of traction control differentials provide better traction in adverse conditions, such as snow and mud, and improve trailer stability. As a global supplier, Eaton has extensive knowledge of vehicle dynamics and safety standards and has worked with global automakers for decades to integrate differentials into new vehicle platforms, including electric vehicles. This technology is an example of the progress Eaton is making toward its 2030 sustainability goals. By 2030, the company aims to reduce emissions from its solutions and across the value chain by 15%.

“With our years of experience producing industry-leading differential gears, we are able to offer our customers a differential solution to meet all of their needs.” “The success of the MLocker spread was just the beginning of our evolution into a global retail spread.”
