The Directorate-General for Transport (DGT) expects more than 7 million journeys on the road over the coming weekend, up 2.19 percent year-on-year, Traffic said in a statement.

This Friday at 3:00 p.m. and until 00:00 next Monday begins the August 15 special operation launched by the General Directorate of Transport to cover the 7,070,000 movements planned for these days, which compares to 2.19 Percent more are to the current data for 2021.

Thanks to the celebration of the national holiday August 15 on Monday, this long weekend, the return trips to change the two weeks of the holiday month of August are complemented by the short-distance trips that take place to places where folk festivals take place as well as those in coastal towns and Beaches or in second home areas as these are a few days of free time and weekend rest within the typical holiday month of August.

For this reason, these days Tráfico has introduced a series of measures to regulate, organize and monitor traffic to ensure safety for the millions of short and long-haul trips planned.

To cover this operation, Traffic has the “maximum availability” of its resources, both human (agents of the Civil Guard Traffic Group, officers of the 7 Traffic Management Centers, helicopter patrols and personnel in charge of equipment maintenance). and the installation of road measures, in addition to rescue service personnel) and materiel (780 fixed speed control radars, of which 92 are sectional radars, 545 mobile radars that can be carried on board ATGC vehicles, 12 helicopters and 39 drones, 23 of which have reporting capacity, in addition to 245 cameras and 15 camouflaged vans to control cell phone use and seat belt use.

The DGT also has unmarked vehicles and motorcycles that circulate on all types of roads to monitor violations.

This operation also coincides with the special alcohol and drug surveillance and control campaign that both the agents of the Civil Guard Traffic Association and their affiliated local police force have been conducting since Monday and through Sunday 14th, both on the streets and in urban centers with the aim of raising awareness of the risk posed by the combination of alcohol and/or drug use and driving.

The traffic forecasts prepared by Tráfico assume that the greatest increase in vehicles will take place on Friday afternoon, mainly between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., causing high intensities and traffic problems at the exits of large cities in the main communication routes of access to the tourist areas of the coast, second homes and population in parties.

In addition, Saturday morning (from 09:00 to 14:00) will continue heavy traffic from downtown areas as well as late morning target areas, adding to the usual short-haul access to beaches and for the celebrations in numerous cities across the national geography.

Regarding the return, the moments of greatest circulatory intensity will take place on Monday between 18:00 and 23:00, according to the DGT at this time there may be problems in the main traffic axes that channel all the return movement from the tourist areas of the coast , recreation and second homes to the accesses of the major urban centers.

To encourage traffic in the most conflict-ridden areas, Traffic will install reversible and additional lanes with traffic cones and alternate routes during peak traffic hours.

Likewise, work on the motorways will be paralysed, the holding of sporting events and other events that involve the occupation of the road will be restricted, and the movement of trucks in general and those transporting certain goods will be restricted in certain sections, dates and hours.
