Consumption center: hamster purchases are unnecessary

Hannover (dpa / lni) – The Lower Saxony consumer center has described purchases of hamster food as inappropriate, lacking in solidarity and neither necessary nor recommended. The consumer advisory center announced on Wednesday that rising energy, fuel and food prices and partially empty supermarket shelves in Ukraine’s war had many people worried. But the food supply in Germany is considered safe. Bottlenecks in the delivery of individual products can be compensated with alternative products. Hamster purchases, on the other hand, exacerbate the problem and could cause unnecessary food waste due to limited shelf life.

“It is understandable that short-term supply bottlenecks, for example for sunflower meal and sunflower oil, worry many consumers. However, buying hamsters is neither necessary nor advisable,” said Anneke von Reeken, nutrition expert of the consumer center of Lower Saxony. Instead of sunflower oil, olive or rapeseed oil can be used: rapeseed oil is available at a similar price and, with its many omega-3 fatty acids, is “even superior to sunflower oil”.

Grain, unlike sunflowers, Germany grows on its own and produces enough flour, so self-sufficiency is ensured, hamster purchases are unnecessary. The limited shelf life and quality loss also speak against long storage, and pests such as the flour moth could nest in the flour. Affected foods should be completely discarded. No bottlenecks are expected for meat and milk, but prices could continue to rise because Ukraine is a major supplier of animal feed.

The consumer care center warned that the energy crisis is also affecting food prices. Rising electricity costs for cold stores made milk and meat products more expensive.
