Catholic official gets into hospital dispute

Vechta/Oldenburg (dpa/lni) – In a dispute over the merger of the St. Pius Catholic Hospital with the Oldenburg Evangelical Hospital, the Vechta Catholic official has come close to criticism. “We want to work together with the Oldenburg Evangelical Hospital on an equal footing. The legal structure must be negotiated under these premises,” a spokeswoman for the official office said in writing on Wednesday.

Earlier, the management and bischöflich Münstersche Offizialat had issued a joint statement on the controversial merger. “We want to secure and strengthen university medicine at Pius Hospital and thus create more development opportunities for the future,” he said. At the same time, the church and the leadership want to “make the hospital more visible and strengthen it as a Catholic beacon.” The road to get there is to be “equally treated as equal together with the Oldenburg Evangelical Hospital”.

In early March, Catholic Auxiliary Bishop Wilfried Theising of Vechta dismissed the entire administrative board of Oldenburg St. Pius-Stift with immediate effect due to the planned merger. The official office, the branch of the Münster diocese in Oldenburger Münsterland, had considered the merger with the evangelical clinic to be incompatible with the foundation’s statutes.

Now was the time to change the statute. According to the press release, the managing director previously fired by Theising has been reinstated. The official offered to withdraw the dismissal of the board members. Theising’s approach received great criticism from the Pius Hospital staff.
