With a major raid, the Berlin police broke up a drug gang and a cocaine delivery service. Berlin investigators arrested five men, including a 37-year-old prison officer. Around 150 officers and special forces searched a total of 13 objects in various districts of Berlin and one in Brandenburg, police and prosecutors announced on Thursday.

According to the information, since September 2021, intensive investigations had been carried out by the authorities against eleven suspects between the ages of 22 and 65. The investigations were carried out by organized drug traffickers and gang members in large numbers.

The defendants are suspected of running a drug delivery service for a long time, with which they are said to have delivered cocaine to “a sizable customer base” on a daily basis and made a lot of money in the process. The gang is said to have used at least two drivers at the same time and throughout Berlin in order to handle a large number of cocaine transfers per day.

In the course of the investigative complex, the investigators managed to clarify to a great extent the organized structures and the work processes of the gang. Among those charged is a 37-year-old prison sergeant who was arrested. This is said to have been a cocaine driver for the gang since mid-November.

Prosecutors issued arrest warrants for the five men. These are due to be announced by a magistrate on Thursday. There were searches at Borsigwalde, Britz, Lichtenrade, Reinickendorf, Rummelsburg, Schöneberg, Steglitz, Wedding and Wilmersdorf, as well as at Glienicke/Nordbahn in the Oberhavel district.

In Berlin, operators of coca delivery services are repeatedly in court. The police have been keeping an eye on the so-called cocaine taxis for a long time. Drugs like cocaine, marijuana and amphetamine pills have been ordered by customers in big cities for years through Internet chat programs and delivered by dealers by car.

Payment is made in cash or by Bitcoin. Drug gangs earn millions of euros with it. (AFP/dpa)
