Several years late, Berlin is converting the streetlights in Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Marzahn-Hellersdorf into charging points for electric cars. The first 200 lights will be equipped with charging hookups in the second quarter, the Senate Transportation Administration announced Monday.

As part of a tender, the acquisition, construction and operation of the charging points were awarded to the company Ubitricity. It was said that the long-planned project could finally start. As part of the project, up to 1,000 connections to charge electric cars will be installed at streetlights in the two outlying districts.

The start of the project has been delayed for years. Originally, the first charging points were supposed to be installed in 2019. The concept initially envisioned that the technology would have to be installed inside the masts. However, it quickly became clear that lack of column space and legal requirements made the intended installation impossible.

Instead, Ubitricity developed a box with charging technology that can be screwed to the outside of flashlights. But the schedule was long gone. Last year, the project had to be postponed again because no company could be found in a tender to install the technology. Developer Ubitricity only got one chance when it was re-granted.

The project must examine “whether the use of the existing public lighting infrastructure, despite the comparatively low charging capacity, is suitable for the supply of charging points for electric cars in public spaces throughout the area, for example, for charging close to home,” he said. traffic management.

The charging system developed by Ubitricity with a power of just 3.7 kilowatts will be used on the masts. That is significantly less than the usual charging stations with a power of 11 kilowatts and more. Consequently, the energy level of the batteries increases slowly. Therefore, the system is more suitable for places where cars stand for a long time and can be charged overnight.

Due to the many delays, the financing of the project by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is also coming to an end. The Senate has now requested an extension of the project period so that up to 800 more lanterns can be retrofitted after the first 200 systems. According to traffic management, a compromise is assumed.
