Belarus has granted political asylum to a US citizen wanted on a warrant for the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The Belarusian news agency Belta reported that Evan Neumann was granted refugee status in the country. “I feel safe in Belarus,” Neumann said, according to Belta. “I like this country.”
According to the FBI, the 49-year-old was indicted on 14 counts last December for his role in the Capitol assault.

Neumann is said to have punched the police officers and attacked them with a metal object, the FBI said in pursuit. Also, he is considered “armed and safe”.
Neumann had already fled the US in February 2021. According to media reports, he traveled from Ukraine to Belarus in August and applied for political asylum there a few months later.
Radical supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol when Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential election was to be certified there.
