Ariane and Sophie Lembrecht: When the mother donates a kidney to her daughter
One of the largest transplant centers in Germany is located at the Charité. About 200 patients receive a new kidney here each year. Sophie Lembrecht is one of them. The particularity: Sophie will receive the new kidney from her mother Ariane. After several days of blood washing, the 24-year-old’s values are finally stable enough for the procedure. Professor Robert Öllinger and his team are ready for the six-hour double transplant.
Little Lee, who has a heart condition, has a visitor at home
Lee Sommer was born almost two years ago with a heart defect. Since then, a suitcase-like box accompanies him wherever he goes: an artificial heart. Until a donor heart is found, Lee can only be treated at the German Heart Center in Berlin. Mama Anja and Papa Steven live nearby in the Ronald McDonald House. Lee never left the hospital grounds, never played with children in a playground. His playmates are adults. Grandmother Birgit is coming to visit us today. Every four weeks, she travels from the Harz mountains to the capital.
Patrick Michaels: With weight loss against diabetes
There has been a diabetes day clinic at the Charité since 1999. Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes can be treated here. Patrick Michaels too: the 47-year-old from Berlin is taking part in a Charité study, which aims to show how diabetics can lose weight and get rid of their type 2 diabetes. Patrick Michaels has had to take pills since he was was diagnosed three years ago. He wants to change that. The study begins with various initial examinations. Doctor Stefan Kabisch is evaluating this and discussing next steps with Patrick Michaels.
Little Mila has to go to the ophthalmologist
New twin parents Anja Jörges and Carsten Ziegler have an appointment today with their daughter Mila at the Charité eye clinic. Two weeks ago, Mila, born two months premature, was discharged from the hospital. Twin sister Delia is still being treated in the neonatal unit. Ophthalmologist Bert Müller specializes in the treatment of premature babies. These are often ventilated with oxygen from birth. This is disadvantageous for the eyes: retinal detachment can be the consequence. For mother Anja and especially father Carsten, the eye examination of little Mila is difficult to bear.
Sascha Henkel: Dream job at Charité despite his deafness
The trolleys for the respective operating theaters are stored in the so-called case trolley warehouse on the Charité Campus Mitte. Sascha Henkel has been working there for three years. The 42-year-old Berliner is the only deaf person in the department and communicates using sign language. Alexander Veit is team leader in the box trolley warehouse and appreciates Sascha Henkel’s commitment to the team. Everyone had to learn to communicate with each other first. Nevertheless, one thing is certain for Sascha Henkel: his work at the Charité has become a second home.
