Whether it’s the long-awaited trip around the world, a project we’d like to implement, or applying for our dream job, certain ideas or wishes would simply make us happier in the long run. We know this and yet it is so difficult for us to approach these projects with energy and courage. How do you become more determined?
5 strategies to become more determined and willful
1. Define the drive
Before we start implementing, before we even start setting concrete goals, we should really consider what our “why” is. What drives us inside? Because to really work at something with determination, we need strong emotions that motivate us. So: What are the values and topics that are important to you?
2. Set goals
The next step is the concrete goals that we can define according to our dynamism. These objectives can of course be quantitative, for example: “I would like to earn xy euros per month”. But sometimes it can be more useful to add at least one more qualitative layer. It could therefore mean: “I would like to earn xy euros per month so that I can travel relaxed and feel financially valued.”
It can help us a lot if we can relate these numbers or values to a feeling or a concrete aspect that we want to achieve with it. It also helps us develop emotional willpower.
Then you can wonder what your life will be like once you achieve your goal. What changed? What can you do now and what might you no longer have to do? How do you feel ? This step is very important because such visualization helps us to connect more emotionally with the goal. We therefore automatically act more decisively.
4. Establish habits
For every big goal, every job we want to get, every project we want to achieve, there are many small steps. So what should we implement in our daily lives to get closer to this intention? What habits support us on the way to the goal? If we practice a little each day to integrate these habits into our daily life, we will get a little closer to this goal each day.
But we shouldn’t judge ourselves too harshly. Because we don’t usually achieve much with coercion and harshness – at least not in the long run. It can be much more useful to turn these positive habits into a ritual and to regularly reward ourselves when we succeed in implementing them. This is how we make it easier for our brain to store something as a habit.
5. Accept setbacks
Even if we want to achieve our goal at all costs, we only have a limited amount of energy. Willpower is not just about wanting to convert something into a cramp. Failure is just as important as success. In the long run, we can work much more purposefully towards our goal if we learn to accept that sometimes things don’t work out or that we just don’t have enough power one day to implement what we have planned. This acceptance of failure and setbacks is an important step on the determined path to the goal.
