Accommodation for refugees: Hannover supports Poznan

Hanover (dpa/lni) – The capital of the state of Lower Saxony, Hanover, wants to support its Polish sister city, Poznan (Posen), in the emergency accommodation of refugees from Ukraine. Relief supplies should be made available for the construction of more emergency shelters, Mayor Belit Onay announced Thursday at the management committee. Hannover will also take in the refugees currently in Poznan. “We are responding to a request from the mayor of Poznan,” said the Greens politician. “The enormous help with which our Polish friends welcome the many displaced people is admirable and moves us.”

According to the information, there are thousands of people seeking protection from Ukraine in Poznan, including many people from the city of Kharkiv, the sister city of Poznan in Ukraine, which was badly affected by the war. According to official estimates, more than 30,000 people from Ukraine traveled to Poznań and about 10,000 stayed in the city. Poznan therefore asked Hannover for help in equipping the sports halls that will be set up as emergency accommodation.

According to the city of Hannover, a convoy of two buses and an escort vehicle will leave for Poland next Tuesday. They were to take up to 100 Ukrainian refugees with them on the return journey.
